Position: Staff Interpreter

Visual Communication Interpreting, Inc. (VCI) is seeking a full time staff interpreter to add to our current staff of professional interpreters and our newest interpreter may be YOU!

WHAT WE ASK FROM YOU:
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • RID/NAD Certified Preferred but not required (NIC, NIC-Adv., NIC Master, CI/CT preferred) or EIPA 4.0+ Certified (acceptable) or passed the RID Written Exam with test intentions in 2018
    • EIPA (3.9 or below is considered “pre-certified/intern” until obtaining RID: NIC certification and is not eligible for this position)
  • Associates Degree or BA/BS (preferred) from a four-year college/university
  • Formal training in sign language interpretation (preferred)
  • Minimum 1 years experience as a certified sign language interpreter (preferred)
  • Proof of professional liability insurance (min. $2,000,000.00 per/occurence)*Certified Only*
  • Fluency in American Sign Language, spoken and written English

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Works on-site or through video remote providing accurate sign language interpretation and voice interpretation
  • Works in VCI office doing other activities to promote and grow the company
  • Dedicates a set amount of time to work for VCI (in the field or in the office) each week
  • Maintains and adheres to a flexible personal schedule
  • Sends and receives text messages to and from office staff during VCI assignments
  • Prepares for assignments in advance by reading job confirmation and preparation materials
  • Adheres to VCI policies and procedures
  • Adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Submits accurate time sheets according to the pay period schedule set forth by VCI
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Able to drive short and long distances: Service areas include all of of East Tennessee (Athens, Chattanooga, Cleveland, Greeneville, Knoxville, Lenoir City, Maryville, Morristown, Oak Ridge and all points in between).
  • Able to sit/stand for long periods of time
  • Able to move head, neck, arms, hands, and torso
  • Able to walk, kneel, stoop and crouch
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 10lbs
  • Able to interpret continuously without a break for a period of up to two hours
  • Able to hear spoken language at a normal conversational sound level
  • Able to speak loudly enough for a small group of people to hear
  • Visual abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or open flames
  • May be exposed to outside weather conditions and wet and/or humid conditions
  • May be exposed to high, precarious places
  • May be exposed to a risk of radiation
  • May be exposed to intense cold or heat
  • Moderate noise level with occasional exposure to high noise level
